December 28, 2015 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: WWE Slammy Awards, MMA Weight cutting

With the longer than usual break of five weeks between TLC and Royal Rumble, there has been little in the way of direction set for the company’s second biggest show of the year. There’s been even less for the biggest show of the year, WrestleMania, which by this time you can usually figure out the direction of the top of the card, and aside from Roman Reigns vs. HHH at some point, and probably Sheamus again, you can’t really even see a direction.

This week there was the push for the Slammy Awards Raw and a live Smackdown on Tuesday. There is also the push coming up for the debut of Smackdown on the USA Network.

The Slammy Awards, a tongue-in-cheek spoof on awards shows that WWE has taken more seriously in its rebirth seven years ago, has in the past been a ratings success for Raw. Last year’s ratings weren’t good and this year’s were just slightly above average for a show during football season that was with going against one of the weaker games of the season.
