SMSU’s Kyle Begin Named NSIC Wrestler of the Week

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – For the second consecutive week a Southwest Minnesota State University wrestler has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week. This week it is Kyle Begin who has earned the honor. The announcement came from the league office in Burnsville, Minn., on Monday afternoon.

Begin, a native of Anoka, Minn., went 2-0 in Southwest Minnesota State’s pair of NSIC duals versus No. 4 St. Cloud State and Northern State. Begin picked up bonus-point wins in each of his victories at 165 pounds this past week, including a 12-0 major decision over No. 7 Gabe Fogarty (SCSU) and a pin at 4:55 over NSU’s Blake Lundgren. The pin was Begin’s 12th of the season and improved him to 23-6 overall. Begin’s pin over Lundgren fueled SMSU to a 42-3 win over NSU, while his major decision over Fogarty was one of SMSU’s three bout victories versus No. 4 SCSU.

It marks the second time in his career that he has been named to the honor and the third Mustang this season. Justin Reinsma earned the honor last week, while teammate Cole Wilson earned it the first week of the season.

SMSU (11-5, 5-2 NSIC) will break for 15 days, but will close-out the regular season at home on Feb. 22, versus U-Mary.
