Leinster appoint ‘perfect role model’ Isa Nacewa as club captain ahead of new season

LEINSTER HEAD COACH Leo Cullen has this afternoon confirmed the appointment of Isa Nacewa as club captain for the 2016/17 season.

The 34-year-old fullback, who is in his seventh season with the province, will once again lead Leinster after he initially took the reins from Kevin McLaughlin just one game into the last campaign.

Cullen has paid tribute to the former Fiji international, hailing him as the ‘perfect role model’ for the squad’s younger players.

“Isa made a superb contribution to the club on his return last season. He stepped up brilliantly in Kev’s absence and then just grew into the role as the season went on,” Cullen said.

“He is a perfect role model for the younger players but is also held in the highest regard by the senior members in our squad. He has a special connection with this club and with the supporters and we all look forward to seeing him back in action.”

Nacewa missed the Guinness Pro12 final defeat to Connacht in May with an arm injury but says he’s in good shape with the new season just around the corner.

“I’m delighted to be appointed captain again. This club means a lot to me and my family and I’m looking forward to the season now and to leading the lads again,” Nacewa said.

Leinster continue their pre-season preparations this weekend when they face Gloucester at Tallaght Stadium this Saturday.

The province’s final warm-up game before their opener against Treviso at the RDS on Friday 2 September comes against Bath at Donnybrook on Friday week.
