Six Nations: England duo Elliot Daly and Jamie George withdrawn from squad as Ollie Lawrence and Jamie Blamire called in

England have been dealt another blow ahead of the Six Nations after Elliot Daly and Jamie George were withdrawn from the squad due to injury.

Daly (hamstring) and George (concussion) sustained their respective problems in Saracens’ 20-14 Champions Cup defeat to Edinburgh over the weekend.

Newcastle hooker Jamie Blamire and Bath centre Ollie Lawrence have been called up to the England squad and will take part in training at Twickenham.

Duo called in as replacements

Jack Walker was the only fit hooker remaining in the squad prior to Tom Dunn’s arrival on Monday, with Blamire taking that number back up to three.

Steve Borthwick’s side are on a five-day training camp ahead of next week’s championship opener with Scotland at Twickenham on Saturday, February 4.

However, the squad is injury hit right now after Monday’s setback that Courtney Lawes and George McGuigan joined Luke Cowan-Dickie on the sidelines.

Daly was set to be a prominent figure after returning to top form with Saracens over recent weeks while George holds plenty of international experience.

It is interesting to note Borthwick has replaced the Saracens full-back with a centre while Lawes’ replacement yesterday, David Ribbans, is a second-row.

Scotland opener fast approaching

England kick-off their Six Nations campaign on home soil against Scotland before they take on Italy at Twickenham on the following Sunday (February 12).

Following a week’s break England travel to Wales on Saturday, February 25 before hosting France on March 11 and then finishing at Ireland on March 18.

“The game against Scotland is a week on Saturday so there is plenty of water to go under the bridge between now and then,” Borthwick said on Monday.

“We have got a good squad and players who are desperate for the opportunity. Whenever there is a setback it opens up an opportunity for somebody else.

Opportunity knocks for some players

“Players have got to grab those opportunities with both hands and not let go. You need a squad where players are competing for places.

“We’ve got to build greater depth. These opportunities allow players to show they can be Test players.”
