As made official in a statement by Les Dogues, Lille have announced that they have signed Brazilian left-back Ismaily on a one-year plus option deal. The defender joins Paulo Fonseca’s side after terminating his contract with Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk following Russia’s invasion of the country and the suspension of Ukrainian football.
Lille were in advanced talks to sign Ismaily in recent days, the player knows Fonseca well from the manager’s time in Ukraine from 2016-2019: he scored a goal in a famous 2-1 victory over Manchester City in 2017 which sure Shaktar qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.
Ismaily said the following in the official statement after joining the club:
“I am very happy to join this great French club. I have heard a lot of good things about LOSC, its infrastructure and its public. I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates. I’m also really looking forward to starting under my new colours and giving my absolute best for the club”
Lilles president Olivier Létang also commented on the signing:
“We are very satisfied to have reached an agreement with Ismaily and to welcome him today to LOSC. He is a player who brings together the qualities, experience and state of mind that perfectly match the profile we were looking for to enrich our squad. We have identified the need to reinforce the number and quality of our full-backs and we had targeted Ismaily as our priority for a long time in the left-back position. It was therefore important to conclude this arrival and this is what we have managed to do, with the confidence and motivation of the player. I would also like to thank the Shakhtar management for agreeing to release Ismaily. We all know the difficult period the Ukrainians are going through and I would like to express our support to them once again. We welcome Ismaily and his family to LOSC and to the North.”
