As reported by L’Équipe, Marseille coach Jorge Sampaoli is very keen for Arsenal defender William Saliba to return to OM next season.
This, however, will be tricky as the 21-year-old France international has been told by Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta that he will be counting on him for next season with the possibility of a contract extension being talked about by the club, making any OM approach unlikely to succeed at this stage.
However, Saliba’s keenness to make France’s World Cup squad for November’s tournament in Qatar could yet change things and both the player and Marseille will wait to see if Arteta does indeed reward the centre-back with the required game time. If not, another loan approach could be made in August by OM, hoping to capitalise on the player’s international hopes should the new season not start as the player wants.
Marseille, however, could face competition for the player with Atlético Madrid, Leicester, Napoli and Newcastle all enquiring over his future. Saliba, meanwhile, confirmed last week that “I belong to Arsenal, and I still have two years there. I will be there for pre-season with Arsenal.”
