Part of Lionel Messi’s signing-on fee paid in cryptocurrency

Paris Saint-Germain have announced this morning that a part of Lionel Messi’s signing-on fee – €40m, according to Le Parisien – was paid for using the club’s cryptocurrency, “Fan Tokens”.

The tokens gain in value depending on the team’s on-pitch results and interest in the club, and are traded among fans.

The value of each “$PSG Fan Token” more than doubled over the course of the last week, with the cryptocurrency on Socios.com allowing fans to choose which messages are displayed in the dressing room and vote on end-of-season awards, among other opportunities for involvement.
