L’Équipe report that Ligue 1 club Marseille posted the biggest financial loss in French football for the 2018/19 campaign, with their accounts €91.5m in red as of 30th June 2019 for the preceding 12 months.

French football’s financial watchdog, the DNCG, is expected to post a complete set of data in the coming weeks, but the advance information that the major French newspaper has obtained paints the picture of 40 clubs in France’s top two divisions who are desperate to see the increase in TV money that Mediapro will bring, at least to Ligue 1, from next season onwards.

By combining the cumulative loss & gains of all Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs for 2018/19, the French 1st division sides sit at an overall loss of €120m, whilst the Ligue 2 teams make up an overall €30m loss.

This result presents a very slight improvement compared to the previous season (June 30, 2018), where the cumulative deficit was €176.3m (€158.7m loss for Ligue 1 and €17.6m loss for Ligue 2).

As you can see therefore, French 2nd division clubs’ cumulative deficit has doubled, whilst Ligue 1 clubs have marginally cleaned up their act somewhat.

Only once in the last 11 years have clubs in both divisions cumulatively posted a net profit.
