L’Équipe report this afternoon that Atletico Madrid will finally not be improving their offer for Edinson Cavani and that the 32-year-old striker will remain at PSG until the end of the season when his current contract expires.

Atleti had been hoping to make a third written proposal for Cavani to Les Parisiens today after having previous bids worth €10m and €15m respectively turned down. They had secretly hoped to sell Thomas Lemar this month which would have allowed them to raise the capital required to be able to do significant January business without encroaching upon FFP regulations.

The situation has infuriated manager Diego Simeone. El Matador was desperate to make the move happen, even offering to accept a salary reduction, but Atleti Sporting Director Andrea Berta was unable to convince PSG to sell. In negotiations, Les Parisiens had always been crystal clear: they would not accept anything less than €20m excluding bonuses. That is also why Atleti have this afternoon given up: there was no room for negotiation.

The end of the story, for now. In summer, Atleti will face competition from Manchester United and Chelsea to sign Edi on a free transfer.
