Scotland: Grant Gilchrist ban rules him out of Six Nations run-in while Glasgow Warriors sign Exeter Chiefs wing

Scotland have been dealt a setback after second-row Grant Gilchrist was given a three-week ban that rules him out of the remainder of the Six Nations.

Gilchrist was red carded during his country’s most recent fixture against France at the Stade de France in Paris, which the Scots lost 32-21 on February 26.

The lock admitted prior to an independent judicial committee, which he attended via video link, that he had committed an act of foul play.

That moment came when Edinburgh second-row Gilchrist caught France flank Anthony Jelonch with his shoulder early in the clash a week last Sunday.

In a statement released on Monday and after reviewing all of the evidence, the committee applied World Rugby’s mandatory minimum mid-range entry point for foul play involving contact with the head, resulting in a starting point of a six-week suspension.

However, the Scotland forward’s early acknowledgement that the incident warranted a red card, his lack of intent and clearly expressed remorse, meant the six-week entry point was reduced to three weeks.

Gilchrist will now be banned for their last two games of the Six Nations, which sees them host Ireland this Sunday and Italy the following Saturday.

The 32-year-old was also due to miss Edinburgh’s United Rugby Championship clash at Connacht later in March, but has had his application granted to take part in the coaching intervention programme instead of missing the third game of his sanction period.

Facundo Cordero joins Glasgow Warriors

Elsewhere in Scotland, Glasgow Warriors have announced that Argentinian wing Facundo Cordero has joined the club until the end of the current season.

Cordero, 24, makes the move north after three years at Premiership side Exeter Chiefs, with Cordero joining fellow Argentinians Sebastian Cancelliere, Domingo Miotti, Enrique Pieretto and Lucio Sordoni at Scotstoun.

Having initially moved to Sandy Park in 2020, Cordero went on to make 33 appearances for the Chiefs, crossing the whitewash on eight occasions across all competitions.

Cordero will link up with the rest of his new team-mates at Scotstoun ahead of the club’s United Rugby Championship clash with Munster, as the Warriors continue their push for a place in the top four.

“I’m very happy to be joining the boys here for the rest of the season,” Cordero told Glasgow’s official website.

“I’ve really enjoyed getting to know everyone so far, and I’m keen to get some game time for this club.

“Having four fellow Argentinians here already really helped me out – the guys came and picked me up from the airport, and they’ve already acted like my family since I arrived!

“I’ve already had some good chats with Franco and the coaches to understand what they want from me – I can’t wait to get started.”

Head coach Franco Smith added: “We’re pleased to be able to add a player of Facundo’s quality to the squad as we approach the business end of the season.

“To be a great team you first need to be a great squad, and Facundo gives us even greater strength in depth in our back-three.
