Diane Kruger Channels the '90s in the Most Elegant Way Possible

There's no question that we're experiencing a '90s revival. Pokémon is back, people are wearing slip dresses over their T-shirts on the street, and Calvin Klein is the brand everyone's talking about. But dressing like an extra on My So-Called Life is probably not a good look for office hours or a great way to get anyone over the legal drinking age to take you seriously. That doesn't mean you have to miss out on the nostalgic trend. Yesterday Diane Kruger showed the world how to channel everyone's favorite decade in the most sophisticated way possible.

Kruger had all the trappings of a true '90s wardrobe: denim jacket, striped T-shirt, and, of course, a simple black choker. As always, her styling was on point (her jacket was draped, fashion-editor style, over her shoulders; her tee was clean and fitted rather than baggy), but it was actually her beauty look that truly elevated the ensemble.

Her waves, while loose and relaxed, could definitely not be described as "grunge." The texture was smooth, not stringy, her part was clean and off to one side (which always looks elegant and sexy), and some bend was added through the midlength with a curling iron. And though she went for black liner—a favorite '90s makeup staple—she drew it in sharp, short wings along the top lashes rather than smudging it around her eyes. A touch of shimmer on the lids and pink lipstick completed the polished makeup look.

As with most things in fashion and beauty, it all comes down to balance. Kruger paired her '90s-inspired outfit and accessories with fresh-looking hair and makeup and, in turn, wound up looking chic and modern, not messy and dated. And by doing that, she also came across an eye-enhancing trick: By matching her liner to her choker, she framed her blue eyes beautifully and really made them shine.
