Anthony Martial: “It’s quite crazy”

Speaking at a press conference yesterday at Clairefontaine at the French national team’s base, Manchester United’s latest signing Anthony Martial reflected on his big money move.

“I don’t know if I am worth €80m. That’s between the two clubs. It’s up to me to prove my worth. It is quite crazy for a player my age. But there is nothing that I can do about it. It is between the two clubs. I will focus on only the pitch. It will be different to Monaco. In England, they really live for football. It is up to me to adapt to that. And to learn English.”

Martial went on to confirm that he was “not good at all” at English but “is going to have lessons”. When asked about his chances of a place in the France squad for EURO 2016, he merely added: “I hope”.

He then went on to speak about his discussions with Louis van Gaal: “He asked me where I like playing the most. I told him up front. He told me that I could play in several positions. That does not cause me any problems.”

On the rest of the Manchester United players: “It’s normal that Rooney doesn’t know who I am. This is my first time with France & I’ve played little in Ligue 1. I spoke a lot with Morgan Schneiderlin.”
