As the tributes to rock legend Tom Petty, who died Monday at the age of 66, rolled in across social media, rock band Coldplay took theirs to the stage in Portland, Oregon.

After a minute of silence following a tragic day—59 people died and 527 were injured in a mass shooting at a country music festival in Las Vegas—lead singer Chris Martin and his band were joined on guitar by REM vet Peter Buck for a rendition of “Free Fallin,’” one of Petty’s biggest and most enduring hits, from his 1989 solo debut, Full Moon Fever.

“On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader, and friend Tom Petty,” a representative for Petty said in a statement, confirming the singer’s death. “He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates, and friends.”

In addition to Coldplay, Sheryl Crow paid tribute to Petty in concert, explaining her hit “If It Makes You Happy” was inspired by Petty.
