Carr Fire: 2 Killed In Erratic Blaze Threatening Homes

REDDING, CA — A wildfire burning in Northern California killed a bulldozer operator and a firefighter, injured additional civilians and firefighters, destroyed 15 structures and is threatening more as residents have been forced to evacuate the area and flee for their safety.

The Carr Fire burning near Whiskeytown, California has consumed over 44,000 acres and is just three percent contained as of Friday morning. The fire was described by a CalFire officials was moving “extremely quickly” and “erratically” into western Redding.

“This fire is extremely dangerous and moving with no regard for what’s in its path,” Carr Fire Incident Commander Chief Brett Gouvea said at a press briefing late late Thursday.

CalFire said in an update Friday that firefighters are working aggressively to build containment lines around the fire but extreme fire behavior and unfavorable weather conditions have hampered efforts.

“Continued hot dry weather is forecasted for the remainder of the week with triple digit temperatures,” officials said. “The number of damaged and destroyed structures reflected may change throughout the duration of the fire.”
