WWII Vet, 104, Hopes You'll Send Him A Valentine's Day Card

LOS ANGELES, CA — If you have love to spare this Valentine’s Day, there is someone special waiting to hear from you. Maj. Bill White, a 104-year-old World War II veteran and one of the oldest living survivors of the Battle of Iwo Jima, is asking people to send him cards this Valentine’s Day for his scrapbook.

The California native promises to cherish the cards.

“I’ll save every one of them like I’ve been saving little things that have come up until right now, and they’ll be a personal part of my history,” White told KTXL.

White’s scrapbook collection is more like a library, filled with 104 years of personal and world history. He earned a Purple Heart from the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima.

“When I was wounded, I didn’t have any choice in the matter. A grenade blew up about 6 inches from me,” White told KTXL. “The fact that I even survived is something. There weren’t too many of us.”

White retired decades ago, and scrapbooking became the hobby that keeps him sharp. He devotes shelves to his collection of momentos organized by year, he told reporters. At 104, that is a lot of memories and the wisdom to appreciate the little things that connect people — such as the joy of opening a card on Valentine’s Day.

Cards can be sent to White at:
