Germany with surprising quick win over Turkey advances directly to Quarterfinal. In second match Netherlands sends Spain home after 3-set match.

6900 thrilling fans saw a dominating German Team in the first set. At the beginning the Turkish Team raised a small 4-3 lead as a result of the strong serves from Neslihan Darnel. But the Germans reversed with a Maren Brinker on fire and took on a four point run (7-4). Especially German Libero Lenka Dürr convinced with lightning reactions in the defense. At the second technical time-out, the team of head coach Giovanni Guidetti already led by four points (16-12). Now it was an easy job for the German Girls to bring it home. Captain Margareta Kozuch converted the last ball at 25-19. Maren Brinker contributed her part to the powerful German game with seven points in the first set.
In the second set Turkey tried to set the pace, leading with two points at 3-1. But again the European Vice-Champion from Germany reacted with good receptions and strong attacks which was well prepared by setter Kathleen Weiß to went up at 10-7. In an outstanding Eurovolley game Turkey fired back with an excellent Gözde Sonsirma Kirdar who scored six times and powerful serves to turn the tables to 16-10. However, the German Team kept cool and showed an impressive finish. Jennifer Gerties who took part primal for the second time at this European Championship, throw three points at 17-21 and opened an extra thrilling final. A burst of speed to 24-22 concluded the final set which was ended by a surprising ball of setter Kathleen Weiß.
Team Germany set the pace also from the beginning of the third set and gained a 6-2 lead. Massimo Barbolini took a simplification time-out to make a clear statement to his team. Turkey increased their performance and were solid in service reception and stopped the powerful spikers Kozuch and Brinker several times at the net. Now Turkey were still ahead with three points (16-13). But at this game, the German Girls were not to stop. They celebrated a spectacular comeback again, thanks to captain Margareta Kozuch. At the end, the Team of Giovanni Guidetti fend two set balls (24-22), before a block from Kozuch ended a great game.

Spain got off a good start with great action by Milagros Collar who gained a small 4-3 lead. The team of Gido Vermeulen turned the tables and tried to put a lot off pressure on Rocio Gomez Lopez in service reception. Now the Netherlands kept control of the match and bounced the result to 15-11. Compared to the first two games, Spain fought bravely and surprised the defense of the Netherlands time and again. However their opponents increased their performance in the attack (63 %) and wrapped up the result at 25-16.
Things didn’t change in the second set. The Netherlands dominated their opponents in all aspects of the game. Maret Grothues led her team to a three-point lead (8-5) at the first technical timeout. The Spanish Team tried their best again and enthuse the fans with some great block action (4). But the game of the team of Gido Vermeulen was too dominant in attack and defense that they had the chance to caused out a really sensation (19-8). An unforced error of Milagros Collar brought up the first set point, Anne Buijs ended it at 25-14.
Spain revealed a little surprise and led 7-3 at the beginning from the third set. It seemed that the Girls from Netherlands were unfocussed at this time. But Gido Vermeulen found the right words in the technical time-out, because his girls cut the distance to one point (10-11) and took the leadership only two rallies later (12-11). From now the Spanish Team could not deal with the power of the Netherlands and had to accept their defeat for the third time (25-18) at the 2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Women.
