Monmouth County Man Arrested In Probe Of Jersey City Killings

NEW JERSEY – A New Jersey man has been charged after he was found with a number of weapons and ammunition in the ongoing probe of the shooting deaths of six people in Jersey City, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced this weekend.

Ahmed A-Hady, 35, of Keyport was arrested after a handwritten note with his phone number was found in one of the shooter’s pants, according to a release from Carpenito’s office.

During the search of his business, Buy N Sell City pawn shop in Keyport, law enforcement recovered six rifles, including three AR-15-style assault rifles, three handguns and one shotgun, according to the release.

Also, during the searches of the pawnshop and A-Hady’s private residence, law enforcement recovered over 400 rounds of ammunition, including a large number of hollow point bullets, according to the release.

The search of a pawn shop and residence was part of the probe into what Gov. Phil Murphy called a deadly “hate crime.” A police officer, three civilians and the two supected shooters were killed. Read more: FBI Finds Van Connected To Jersey City Killings

A-Hady is charged with one count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He was arrested by FBI agents early Saturday and is expected to appear on Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph A. Dickson in Newark federal court, according to the release.

The suspects who were killed were David Anderson, 47, and Francine Graham, 50, according to Attorney General Gurbir Grewal. The attorney general said the two were the primary suspects in a Bayonne murder over the weekend, and Anderson held anti-Semitic and anti-law enforcement beliefs. Services were announced for Detective Joseph Seals, 39, a married father of five, who was killed by the suspects in Bayview Cemetery on Garfield Avenue prior to the shootings at the grocery, according to Jersey City Police Chief Mike Kelly. Moshe Hersh Deutsch, 24, of Brooklyn and Leah Mindel Ferencz, 32, who owned the kosher grocery store that was attacked, were identified as two of the civilian victims. Grewal said two of the victims were Orthodox Jews, but he didn’t say which ones.

Miguel Jason Rodriguez, 49, of Jersey City, who emigrated from Ecuador three years ago, was also killed, Grewal said. One person who was inside the store managed to escape and survive; that person wasn’t identified.

According to the complaint:

After the shooting, law enforcement recovered from Anderson’s right rear pants pocket a handwritten note that contained a telephone number ending in 4115, and a Keyport address. Law enforcement also recovered several weapons carried by Anderson and Graham, including an AR-15 rifle, according to the release.

FBI agents determined that the phone number ending in 4115 contained on the note belonged to A-Hady. Law enforcement also determined that the Keyport address listed on the note was a storefront for a pawn shop, according to the release.

Law enforcement obtained records of A-Hady’s history of firearm purchases. Those records indicated that around May 23, 2007, A-Hady purchased a Smith and Wesson .45 caliber handgun bearing serial number NHN5284.

Records also indicate that on or about June 2, 2007, A-Hady purchased a Smith and Wesson .44 caliber handgun bearing serial number CEV4085.

After purchasing the firearms, A-Hady was convicted on April 2, 2012, in Monmouth County Superior Court, of attempting to obtain a controlled dangerous substance by fraud, a crime punishable by more than one year in prison. As a result of that conviction, A-Hady is no longer permitted to possess a firearm.

On Friday, law enforcement officers traveled to the pawnshop and interviewed A-Hady and two of his relatives. During the course of A-Hady’s interview, he admitted to owning both the .45 caliber and the .44 caliber, but falsely denied that they were on the premises, according to the release

After A-Hady was interviewed, one of his relatives told law enforcement that there was a safe located inside. The relative said the safe contained firearms, including A-Hady’s .44 and .45 caliber handguns, according to the release.

The relative consented to a search of the safe located inside the pawnshop. Law enforcement recovered three firearms: a PK 380; a Ruger 9mm bearing serial number 33389546; and the Smith and Wesson .44 caliber handgun bearing serial number CEV4085, according to the release.
