MSU beats SMSU, 29-9, to Stay Prefect on the Season
MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State keeps its undefeated season alive with a 29-9 dual win over Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday evening at Taylor Center.
MSU (3-0, 3-0 NSIC) revenges its loss to SMSU (3-3, 0-1 NSIC) from a year ago.
Corey Abernathy (Fr., 184 lbs.) and Scott VanDeLoo (Jr., 197 lbs.) secured the win for the Mavericks by winning from falls. Abernathy won at the 5:32 mark, while VanDeLoo won in 1:32. After the two falls, MSU led 26-9.
#4 Cody Quinn (Sr., 165 lbs.) beat Jake Begin for the first time in four tries. Quinn won by a 7-2 decision win. Da’Wayne Robertson (Jr., 125 lbs.) got things started with a 13-5 major decision win thanks to riding time. Alphonso Vruno (Jr., 141 lbs.) also won by a major decision, 17-5.
Malcolm Allen (Jr. 285 lbs.) finished the dual with a loss to #5 Cole Wilson. Both heavy weights traded escapes after choosing down to start the period. Wilson secured a win with a takedown with five seconds remaining in the third period.
Southwest Minnesota State will travel to Kearney, Neb., on Saturday for the Midwest Duals where they will face Colorado State-Pueblo, Central Missouri, Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Mesa.
MSU-Mankato is back in action next Thursday, Jan 22, at Taylor Center against U-Mary. Dual start time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
