Woman in Australia arrested for drink driving – while riding a horse

A woman in Australia was arrested for drink driving after she rode a horse to a bottle shop and was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.226 per cent – more than four times the legal limit.

Police were called to a tavern near Brisbane at 11.30pm and discovered that a 51-year-old woman  had ridden her horse through the drive-through section and was refusing to leave.

She turned out to be heavily intoxicated and apparently had been drinking wine while she rode.

Police officers arrested the woman and took her to a police station.

Council workers walked the horse back to her property,  about four miles away.

"Police want to remind the public that drink driving does not just mean a vehicle, it can include a horse," a police statement said.

The woman was charged with being in control of a horse whilst under the influence of liquor.

Police released footage of the arrest in which the woman could be seen dismounting the horse, surprisingly successfully.

“Upon arriving at the business, the woman allegedly rode the horse through the drive through section of the tavern and appeared heavily intoxicated,” the police statement said.

The woman is due to appear in court on June 26.

Australia has a long history of arresting people for drink driving while commanding vehicles other than cars.

In recent years, numerous people have been caught drunkenly driving motorised drink coolers and a group was arrested in Perth in 2015 while driving motorised picnic tables.

Two years ago, police in an outback town offered cash prizes to drivers who were found to be driving with a zero blood-alcohol level during the Christmas holidays.
