Several Ligue 1 players handed suspensions for betting breaches

The Ligue 1 authorities have announced that a total of 76 players, coaches and directors have been sanctioned over breaches in the regulations banning them from taking part in sports betting.

All instances relate to bets which were placed during the 2020/21 season. Auxerre goalkeeper Donovan Léon has been handed a five-match ban, three of which suspended, while Brest forward Irvin Cardona will sit out four games, two of which suspended, and has received a €1,500 fine.

Montpellier midfielder Sacha Delaye and Strasbourg defender Alexander Djiku are both banned for one match, and will miss out on the return of Ligue 1 action next Wednesday. Jean-Charles Castelletto, the Nantes defender, has been inflicted a four-match suspended sentence.

Among all players in the top two divisions, Quevilly-Rouen’s Samy El Khiar has received the biggest sentence, as he misses four games and is made to pay €2,000 in case of any repeat offence,
