Dani Alves: “Kylian Mbappé still hasn’t understood that his attack partners are more phenomenal than him.”

Brazil right-back Dani Alves (39) has criticised former Paris Saint-Germain teammate Kylian Mbappé (23) in an interview with Italian media La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Alves and Mbappé played together at the Parc des Princes from 2017 until 2019, and he has now criticised the Frenchman’s lack of humility. At the age of 39, Alves has made Brazil’s World Cup squad, whilst Mbappé scored in France’s opener against Australia.

Now on international duty, Alves has said that Mbappé doesn’t recognise that his Brazil teammate Neymar (30) and Argentina forward Lionel Messi (35) are more “phenomenal” than him.

In the interview, transcribed by RMC Sport, Alves said, “A big player must always know and understand with whom he is playing. His teammates enrich his qualities. Mbappé is a phenomenon, who hasn’t yet understood that his attack partners are more phenomenal than him.”

Alves is close with Neymar, and Mbappé has previously described his relationship with the Brazilian forward as “hot and cold.” Alves continued, “Neymar and Messi are unique. They see and do things that no one else can do. You have to be smart to make the most of their potential. These are two genies of football. I think I can touch the ball well, but when I played with Leo, I gave him the ball and if I play with Ney, I give him the ball. If Mbappé gave the ball to those two, he would score 150 goals.”

Mbappé and Alves played 57 games together, and five out of Alves’ 17 assists at the club were for the French forward, who this summer committed his future to the reigning Ligue 1 champions.
