Daya’s New Music Video for “Sit Still, Look Pretty” Is Awesomely Feminist

This year is shaping up to be a great one for women. Hillary Clinton sealed the Democratic nomination. The Final Five dominated the 2016 Rio Olympics. And in the music biz, numerous pop stars have come out with powerful, inspiring songs about female empowerment.

At the ripe age of 17, one of the singers leading the charge is Daya (pronounced “dey-uh”), whose recent hit “Sit Still, Look Pretty” is a feminist anthem about how women deserve equal rights. “You should never be put into a mold based on your gender,” Daya recently told InStyle on a visit to our N.Y.C. office.

Today, in advance of her debut album on Oct. 7, she dropped the visual treatment to her single—a meditation on how women are more profound and complex than their exteriors. In the video, Daya is dressed up like a doll, clad in a tight-fitted red dress, before she aggressively rebels against her handlers.
