The main event of SummerSlam this year was huge and delivered on most expectations from fans. The match was a Fatal 4-Way Universal Championship match featuring Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns, and Samoa Joe. Despite threatening to leave WWE if he lost, Brock Lesnar actually managed to retain the Universal Championship, although the match did see Lesnar fall victim to a number of big spots involving Strowman. Lesnar and Strowman now have a singles match against each other at the upcoming No Mercy pay-per-view. New details have since come out about the widely-praised SummerSlam main event.
The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer commented on the match on his Wrestling Observer Radio show recently. Interestingly, Meltzer believes that some of the match may have been influenced by Lesnar’s advocate Paul Heyman. The choice to have the match be more of a spectacle emphasizing big spots rather than in-ring work is a decision that Heyman likely helped influence in some way. Reports that Heyman advocated for Samoa Joe to win the match also surfaced before the match took place. This could become more interesting if Heyman does decide to contribute to putting together more matches, but the SummerSlam main event did seem to have the former ECW owner’s influence all over it.
In other news, some fans have been wondering why the ‘Burn it Down’ lyrics were added to Seth Rollins’ entrance music. The previous theme was an instrumental which featured no words at all. The change was added a few weeks ago because Vince McMahon did not like the pause included in the beginning of the entrance theme. Rollins admitted this on the Sam Roberts podcast recently. Rollins said, “It’s a weird thing where all of a sudden I got to Raw that day, and they’re like, ‘hey, we gotta do something with your music? I’m like, ‘what do you mean? It’s the same music I’ve used for the last three years. What’s the problem, all of a sudden?’ They were like- ‘Vince doesn’t like the pause’.”
